　　TheUniversity of Southampton is one of the top 10 research-leduniversities in the UK and we are ranked 16th in the UK (the Times GoodUniversity Guide 2008). We are internationally renowned for offeringstudents first class facilities and outstanding teaching standards in aculturally diverse environment. We value our close relationships withinstitutions around the world and attract the most promising studentsand staff to the University through our groundbreaking research andlinks with business and industry. The University of Southampton has itsroots in the Hartley Institute, founded in 1862. It was granted itsRoyal Charter in 1952. Since then, it has had some notable alumniincluding John Hyde, who played a part in designing the Intel PentiumProcessor, and Stephen Payne, the chief designer of Queen Mary 2.

　　Southampton is situated on the south coast of England, just over 1 hourtrain journey from London. We have a student population of around22,000 and approximately 3,500 international students from over 130countries.
