William: Hi I'm William.

Feifei: So any plans for the weekend?

William: Yeah, I'm going to the go to the football with my dad.

Feifei: You don't sound very happy about it.

William: Well, I don't really like football but my dad's been begging me to go with him for ages.

Feifei: Who's playing?

William: Fulham and Liverpool. My dad is a die-hard Fulham fan and he goes to all the matches.

Feifei: What do you mean by a die-hard Fulham fan?

William: Well, the phrase die-hard is used to describe people who believe in something a bit old-fashioned or out-of-date but they won't change their beliefs.

Feifei: Die-hard 也可以用来形容某个人坚持追随一个在他人眼里看来已经过时的信念或看法。So is your dad old-fashioned then William?

These die-hard fans have dressed in their team's colours.

William: No, no. This is actually a new meaning of the phrase die-hard. When I say my dad is a die-hard Fulham fan, I mean that he would support Fulham no matter what!

Feifei: A die-hard 通常指一个球队，乐队，歌手等等的忠实粉丝，不论发生什么，他们都坚持不变。

William: So whether Fulham win or Fulham lose my dad would still support them and go to all their games.

Examples

A: Those die-hard surfers, they'll go in the water any time of the year!

B: I'm a die-hard Beatles fan! I own all their albums.

William: So in that second example we heard the speaker saying, "I'm a die-hard Beatles fan". The word die-hard is very commonly used with the word fan.
