  Under-eating, avoidance of food and voerdoing the e xercise routine are becoming major problems among young girls today, o acknowledges Dr virsen ruparel, a mumbai -based family medical practitioner.

  O:in an attempt to look thin, some girls will go to ridiculous limits. Some go to two different aerobic cla sses in the same day while others pop pills and go on c razy fad diets in an attempt to lose weight in a hurry.

  O:the-being-thin-carze has reached an obsessive lev el not just in the indian fashion industry but also amo ng the general population. It cause concern because it' s more concentrated on being thin than on being healthy and fit.

  As young indian girls get more anxious to emulate t he flab-free skinny figures they see as ideal role mode ls in the many images that surround them on television, big screen and in printed materials, eating disorders s uch as anorexia nervosa and bulimia are on the rise. Th ough there are no studies in india, neuropsychiatrists like Dr Rajesh parikh say there's been a dramatic-incre ase in the number of people presenting themselves with anorexia symptoms, which include severe weight loss and an intense fear of putting on weight. "Ten years ago, i saw only a handful of anorexia cases. Over the last dec ade, there's been a ten-fold increase in the number of anoexia patients who vistit me", he says "Dr parikn, wh o feels that many more casses go unreported and many ot hers ramain on the brink of the disease.

  O:they will exercise real hard, constantly weigh th emselves on the weighing scale and ignore their diet. T he general thinking is that if i eat I will put on weig ht, so they don't just allow themselves to feel hungry.
