Janet's biography Janet Damita Jackson was born on 16 May, 1966, in G ary, Indiana, USA. Jackson was the youngest of the nine children in the family that produced the Jackson Five ( including Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson and LaToya Jackson). When Janet was four years old, the family moved to the Los Angeles area; three years later she made her pe rforming debut in Las Vegas with her brothers. At the age of nine, she Joined them on a television special. She was cast in the US television programmes G ood Times from 1977 to 1979 and Different Strokes from 1981 to 1982. Next she signed to A&M Records in 1982 and recorded her self-titled debut album, followed by Dream Street i n 1984. Jackson's breakthrough came in 1986 with Control, w hich reached number 1 and produced an astonishing five US Top 10 singles and three UK Top 10 singles. Jackson undertook her first concert tour in 1990. B y the end of the year she had scooped eight Billboard a wards. In 1991, Jackson became the first artist in history to have culled from one album seven Top 5 singles in th e Billboard chart. In 1993 Jackson made her own movie debut as the her oine of director/screenwriter John Singleton's Poetic J ustice, for which she received lukewarm reviews. That s ame year, Jackson's Virgin album, Janet., shot to the t op of the pop and R&B (rhythm-and-blues) charts. |
