  Getting a job

Looking for a job is tough period in a person's lif e, whether he is a college graduate going on his first interview, or has just lost the one he had, or a mother going back into the work force, or a bored forty-year-o ld looking for a new challenge and opportunity.

The most important weapon one can have is self-know ledge: to know well a complete inventory of his skills and what he likes to do best. Then he should head in th e direction of the companies that can use his areas of interest. He should research the companies themselves w ell, too, before he approaches them. A good way to prep are is to read the company's annual report for the last several years, know what goods and services they provid e, how their profits are doing, and the name of the chi ef executive officer. He may also check the Reader's In dex at the public library for news on the company that has appeared in major publications during the past year s.

If self-knowledge is a necessary component of succe ss in job hunting, so is self-confidence.

  Writing a Resume

The first task in job hunting for a man or woman is the preparation of a good, selling resume.

Men and women entering the job market for the first time, or women re-entering after a long time out for ch ild-raising, often have a major problem: a lack of self -esteem. In order to succeed in writing an effective re sume, one must first convince oneself that one has valu e. The resume should possess as much "sales appeal" as possible. Take a college graduate for example, he shoul d not be shy about a job well done, starting with his h onors at college. If he was on the dean's list, he may state how many times. Was he an officer of his class or of student government? Did he hold any paid jobs while he was going through college? Whatever he did, he can d escribe it with pride.

A resume usually begins with a short paragraph that summarizes the major accomplishments in one's life. If his credentials warrant it, this paragraph should portr ay an persistent record of specific, measurable accompl ishment. It should make interesting reading for someone who has never met him. This paragraph might make or bre ak his opportunities, so he should work hard at it. Man y employers don't have the time to plough through a lon g resume, but if he catches their interest right at the start, they will finish reading his.
