Man who found $640,000 gets big reward

CLEVELAND—A security guard will get a $75,000 rewar d for returning $640,000 that fell from an armored truc k, even though he held onto the cash two days before re turning it, authorities said on Tuesday.

FBI officials at first objected to any reward being paid to Mark Morant, 38, because they felt he held onto the cash too long in an apparent indecision over whethe r he could get away with keeping it.

Morant, the father of three children, said he never intended to keep the money. He said he tried last Thurs day to contact the Federal Reserve Bank about finding t he missing money the day it fell from he truck in downt own Cleveland but was unable to reach any bank official s with a pay phone call.

The Cleveland man returned the money to the bank la st Friday in three unopened bundles. Morant said he was subjected to an intense interrogation by FBI agents, wh o were skeptical about his motivations, but they finall y concluded he had done nothing wrong by the 48-hour de lay in returning the money.

Van Harp, agent-in-charge of the Cleveland FBI offi ce, said the agency decided he should get the reward be cause he had left the money intact without even breakin g into the bundles.

AT Systems, the armored truck company which offered the reward, announced that in addition to the $75,000 i t would pay a $10,000 reward to the man who saw Morant gather up the fallen money and who gave his description to police.
