Last Minute Pardon Halts Executioner's Sword
A Yemeni man escaped execution by the sword in Saudi Arabia when his victim's father stood up at the last minute and forgave him, a Saudi newspaper reported on Wednesday.
A crowd gathered in the Saudi capital Riyadh to watch the execution of 20-year-old Jahwi Hussein Qasim Abubakr, convicted of killing Saud ibn Daghaileeb Al-Markouzi Al-Buqami.
As the executioner raised his sword, Saud's father stood up suddenly and declared:“I have pardoned him, seeking the pleasure of Allah.”
Saudi Arabia implements strict Islamic sharia law, executing murderers, rapists and drug smugglers, usually by public beheading. In murder cases, the victim's family can spare convicts the death penalty.
