John has a driving lesson. His teacher, Mary, is waiting for him in the car and listening to the radio.
Mary: Hello, John. Ready to go?
John: Yep. Let me just start the car.
Mary: Wait. You should deactivate the electrical systems first. If anything is left on during start-up ...
John: ... it may divert juice from the battery. Gotcha. ... Oh-oh, the engine’s not turning over.
Mary: Try pumping the accelerator.1 But easy does it. If you pump too fast, you’ll flood the engine.
John: So I should hold the accelerator steady between tries instead of pressing and releasing it?
Mary: Bingo! Leave about ten to fifteen seconds between attempts, as a rule of thumb.2
John: Well, it’s not working. Maybe it’s the starter.
Mary: Could be, but usually the battery is the culprit.3 I’ll go check the connections.
(Mary exits the car and opens the hood.)
Mary: Remember, John, to never touch the body of the car when you’re tightening the terminal connections. It could be terminal!
John: Right. ... But it’s no good. It still won’t start. Now what?
Mary: Well, our last resort is to gingerly4 tap the starter with a screwdriver.
(John hands Mary a screwdriver from the car and she taps the starter.)
Mary: OK, cross your fingers.
John: Here goes! ... Hey, what do you know? It’s working.
Mary: Excellent. Now let’s get this show on the road!
