The city will start to move bus lines,commercial constructions and residential area out of the People's Square area from July to make the heart of the city more conducive to sightseeing,Youth Daily reports.

　　This matches plans made in the early 1990s by the municipal government to build the squaresintosa cultural landmark,officials said.The plan said the square would be mainly made up of green area,with a subway transfer station underground.

　　The biggest change in the square took place in 1994when 140,000-square-meters of green area replaced commercial buildings.More cultural buildings were built in the following years,including the Grand Theatre,the Shanghai Museum and the City Planning Exhibition Hall and the old People's Park was expanded.

　　However,dozens of bus lines remained in the area because the square is linked to many busy roads,including Xizhang Road,Fuzhou Cultural Street,Yan'an Road and Nanjing Road East.The square is particularly crowded and congested during peak times,which has given rise to many complaints from those passing by.

　　No bus lines will be running right through the square,officials said.All bus lines that do so at present will change routes and some bus terminals will be moved underground.An underground bus terminal will very probably be built in the southeastern corner of the squareswheresa large electronic screen stands,they said.

　　The Music Bookstore and Jingpin Department Store near the People's Park will also be relocated to make room for a sightseeing underground square,which will connect the East Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall and the two metro lines.Planners hope that this will also help reduce the volume of pedestrians on the ground.

　　The last residential complex left in the area --80-year-old alley housing covering more than 7,000square meters in the southeastern corner of the square will be removed.Some 180families will all moved out next month.

　　In 1986,the British built a horserace courseswheresthe square now standards.After the city's liberation in 1949,the course was removed and the place was developedsintosa busy residential and commercial center of the city.
