Mr.Steven Chu-Nobel Prize Winner
http://www.sina.com.cn 2002/08/12 15:50  中国周刊

All motherland and overseas Chinese are in a great joy when Nobel Prize result came out. But the winner was very calm: "l don't want the prize interrupt my teaching schedule. " said Mr.Steven Chu.

On Oct. l5. l997, Mr. Steven Chu won the Nobel Prize for physics for the year l997. The professor who has been teaching for 11 years in Stanford told the reporters after he heard this news.

"I don't want the prize interrupt my schedule, I will go to teach as what I did before. My students should treat me as before, maybe more respectful; but if there is any big change, I would feel surprised.”

Mr. Chu said so and did so. On the day he knew the news, although there was time difference, he was waken up by his students. He continuously received the telephone calls from journalists early from 4:00 am. At 10:00 a.m. he attended a press conference for him hosted by Stanford, only 40 minutes later he left the conference and rushed to his lesson on l l:00 a.m.

Mr. Chu didn’t go to Sweden to attend the prize awarding ceremony on Dec. l0, probably on account of his lessons. Although he didn't appear on the occasion, didn't receive by himself the Nobel Prize, Certificate and the Medal from the King of Sweden; didn't accept flowers, praises and hails on the stage from the surrounded; but he devoted all himself to his students and education. This common behavior set up a great model to all other people. They feel pity that he didn't give a speech on the occasion, but at the same time they can’t help admiring him, silence is even better at this moment!

Mr. Yuan-Tseh Lee foretelling comes to that Mr. Chu wins the Nobel physics Prize for the year 1997

Prof. Steven Chu is the fifth overseas Chinese Nobel Prize winner after Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee, Mr. Chen-Ning Yang, Mr. Samuel Chao Chung Ting and Mr. Yuan-Tseh Lee since recent 40 years, and also the fourth overseas Chinese physicist who won the Nobel Prize.

Mr. Chu's mother town is Taicang Jiangsu Province (China),swhereshas born another woman scientist Madam Wu Jianxiong (May 31, l912 - Feb 16, l997). Madam Jingzhen Lee -- Mr. Chu's mother, when I studied economy in Massachusetts Institute of Technology met Mr. Chu's father, Mr. Rujin Chu. The couple came to America in the 1940s. They have 3 sons, all well learned and successful. Mr Steven Chu's elder brother, Mr. Zhuwen Chu is a medical professor in Stanford younger brother Mr. Qinwen Chu, is a Doctor in the science of law, and working in a famous law office in Los Angles.

Mr. Steven Chu was born in Missouri USA in Feb 28, l948. He was one of the top students when he studied in high school, but not the first.“After I went to college," he recalled, "I didn't limit myself in text books, I learned all the professions that I was interested in, therefore I became the best student." In 1970, he received 2 bachelor degrees in mathematics and physics in New York; in 1976, he won the Doctor degree in physics, and worked as a post PhD for 2 years. The couple of Mr. Ruin Chu and Madam Jingzhen Lee who living in South California, responded calmly after they knew their son had won the Nobel Prize. They told the reporters: "Steven is just an ordinary person from young to now, nothing special." They also expressed:”But as parents we are very happy that our son win the Nobel Prize, more important,“he wins the honor for the Chinese people."

Winning honor for Chinese is the common will of all overseas Chinese people, and the great main strength of our nation's unity, strive, great vitality and progress.

Mr. Steven Chu is a very easy going and slovenly man who has the sharp insight. He can always right point out the crux of the problem. Talking about his growing experience, he said "the most important thing is to bring forth the new ideas."

It is the honor of all Chinese people that Mr. Chu wins the Nobel Prize for Physics. Yet he was born and grew up in America, his technical background is in America too, and his Chinese is not that fluent. He said:“I was born and growing up in the U.S, of course I am American. But my tie of blood is Chinese, therefore my basic views of values are Chinese.”

“I have read some Chinese history when I studied in college. But talking about good traditions, I don’t think people should be distinguished by races or nationalities. My parents cultivated us in a way of Chinese and western combination. If there is any pity now, it is I can't speak Chinese fluently. When I was a child, my parents wanted me and my elder brother to learn Chinese, but we didn't like to. Because we thought we lived in western society, and all our friend were western, we didn't want to do anything different from them. But if there is someone wants me to learn Chinese now, I won't refuse as I have done before.”

Mr. Chu loves traditional Chinese cu1ture very much, and is very confident about the future of China. He said: "The most important resource of China is 'human', all Chinese people are diligent and kind. There are many excellent traditions in the rich Chinese history. To China, the directions of future development is very important. In my eyes, we are developing to the accurate and positive directions on many sides now."

Mr. Chu is very humorous and versatile. He likes tennis, swimming and bicycle. Mr. Yuan-Tseh Lee likes tennis too, but he said: "Evaluated in the standard of professional American tennis players, all people will think Mr. Steven Chu is better than me." He also said“Although Mr. Chu is up to his 50s, he looks like he’s in his 30s." Indeed, Mr. Chu is very easy going and slovenly. He usually wears a T-shirt or blue shirt, rolls up his sleeves, biking with a fabric bag. He looks like a post-graduate student rather than a professor in a famous university. Mr. Chu is quick reacted with a sharp insight, he can right point out the crux of the experimental problems. His Chinese student Mr. Jin Zheng said: "It is very common in the laboratory, when students ask him questions with doubts and misgivings, he always ask you back some questions slightly, then right point out the crux at once. And the results of the experiments are always on his side." To bring forth new ideas is the most important thing in Mr. Chu's thoughts. He thinks the student who has more new ideas but less gifted can achieve more than the gifted one who has less new idea. He took an example of himself and his elder brother:

"When we studied in high school, my elder brother was the first top student and well-known, while I was only within the top ten, not the first. After we went to college, 1 studied hard to catch up, then I became the best student and my brother was less known. At the time I promoted to a professor in Sanford he was only an associate professor." Mr. Zhuwen Chu who is already a medical professor in Stanford, unwillingly endorsed his younger brother and smiled. He is very proud of Steven who surpassed him. Mr. Chu cares about the education of China very much. He thinks the Chinese schools emphasize too much on the text books, and the examinations are too frequent, but lacking of encouragement to students to bring forth new ideas. He said: "The aim of constructions of China is not only to catch up with developed countries, but also to surpass them."

Talent training is very important. China is rich in natural resources, has many excellent talents, especially the young men who come to America. Half of students in Berkeley, California University are Asian Americans, and the Chinese ones are the best. There are many Chinese students in Stanford too. They study hard, and are good at text books, but lack practical ability or new ideas. The scores of American students do not score as high as Chinese, but they are full of new ideas and courage. Sometimes, they behave unimaginably and even seem mad, thus they can make surprising achievements. For example the Yahoo Corporation is formed by some students in Stanford. They exploited software when their tutor was not in the institute, for one year and they made a big success.

"The most important is to bring forth new ideas." Mr. Chu said so. It is the experience of a Nobel Prize winner and the advice from the bottom of his heart. And it gives us big inspiration.
