Background about the Shunyi School Facility

　　In January 2002, International School of Beijing-Shunyi welcomed more than 1,350 students to brand new, state-of-the-art facilities designed by New York architectural firm Perkins & Will with the support of Beijing Institute of Architectural

　　Design and Research. Featuring abundant natural lighting and environmentally friendly construction, the school was built by Zhong Ji Constructionsgroupsunder the supervision of Beijing He Qiao Property Management Co., Beijing Shuang

　　Yuan Engineering Consultancy and Supervision Co., and Beijing Tianzhu Real Estate Development Corporation.The vision of this modern school facility began in 1995, when the board of the International School of Beijing foresaw that their facilities at the Holiday Inn Lido would become too small for the growing number of international students seeking a high quality education. After five years of research, planning, financing, and surveying, actual construction of the new school began in the spring of 2000. The facility was completed in fall 2001, and students began their first day of classes there on January 7 this year.

　　Located in the immediate vicinity of residential villas such as Capital Paradise, Lomond Lake, Eurovillage, and River Gardens, the school is envisioned as a community center for international families in Shunyi District.Highlights of the school facility are: a 600-seat professional theater, a 6-lane competition swimming pool, 3 gymnasiums, 2 libraries, 2 cafeterias, 12 science laboratories, and extensive outdoor sports grounds. The high-tech facility boasts voice and data ports throughout the building, as well as fiber optic links that enable teachers and students to access video on demand. Educational software located on a virtual drive can be accessed by personal computers throughout the school on an as need basis.

　　School History

　　International School of Beijing-Shunyi (ISB) is an English-language day school offering international curriculum, pre-kindergarten to grade 12, for expatriate children in Beijing, China. By law in the People's Republic of China, only students with foreign passports can be admitted to ISB.

　　ISB has its roots as a diplomatic school, originating in the U.S. Embassy compound in the early 1970s as a "Little red schoolhouse"for children of American diplomats. The International School of Beijing was formally established in 1980 by the embassies of five nations: United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. In the ensuing 20 years, the school grew from a small elementary school to a full-range elementary, middle, and high school with students from more than 50 nations.

　　Upon its move to the Shunyi facility, the school ceased to be a diplomatic entity and became a school for foreign children under the auspices of the Beijing Municipal Government. A board of directors elected from the school's parent association has oversight of the school.

　　ISB is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program for high school students.
