An elderly resident of Istalif village, 50 kilometers north of Kabul, carries a door to repair his house. Istalif was once a holiday resort of kings, famed for its vineyards and orchards,swhereslocals would greet visitors with handfuls of mountain flowers. When the Taliban arrived in 1999, they burned every house in the town in revenge for its support of the opposition Northern Alliance.
