Shanghai will turn 10 kilometers of its East China Sea coastsintosa modern beach resort by 2007, Shanghai Water Authority officials announced yesterday. The beach resort near the city's Pudong International Airport is expected to cost some 6 billion yuan (US million) and the project will involve building a seawall. Experts will compare the geographical conditions at two sea beach choices in the city's Nanhui and Fengxian districts to select the final location for the planned largest beach resort in the city. Both districts have long coastlines near the Pudong International Airport. Shanghai has three beach resorts - in Sanjia Port in Pudong District, Hengsha Island in Baoshan District and in Jinshan District. However, they either have poor-quality water or inconvenient transportation, according to the officials. "As an international metropolis like Shanghai with more than 400 kilometers of coastline, it will be a pity if it does not have an decent beach resort," said a Fengxian District government official. According to the blueprint for the new beach resort, seawater will be treated in a pool and introducedsintosthe seawall. An indoor surfing area and a golf course will also be built on the resort. |
