Rock fans in Hong Kong won't be getting any satisfaction this weekend as the Rolling Stones have canceled two shows in the city due to the outbreak of a mysterious illness in the region. But organizers of the band's April 1 performance in Shanghai say they hadn't been informed of any plans to cancel the Shanghai show as of yesterday evening. "Increases in the number of cases of SARS in Hong Kong and southern China and continued concern over large gatherings have created apprehension among fans and concern for their safety," the Stones said in a statement. The concerts were originally scheduled for today and tomorrow. No dates have been announced for rescheduled shows. Xin Xin Sports, organizer of the Shanghai show, claims that 80 percent of tickets for the April 1 show have been sold. The show is scheduled for Shanghai Grand Stage, which seats about 10,000 people. According to Yuan Shuwen from Xin Xin Sports, all the low-price tickets at 350 yuan or 600 yuan each have been sold out and about 90 percent of VIP tickets priced between 2,800 yuan and 3,000 yuan have been sold. "It's hard to say who is buying the low-price tickets because they are being sold at many places in the city," said Yuan. "But our company sells the VIP tickets directly so that I know many middle-aged expatriates and Chinese who came back after studying abroad are buying these tickets." |
