Construction began yesterday on Shanghai's third ring road, which is expected to relieve urban traffic congestions when it is completed in 2007. The 70-kilometer-long Middle-Ring Road will connect a dozen current streets with newly built, elevated sections and run between the Inner and Outer-Ring roads. Those two existing expressways are about 20 kilometers apart. The project, which will cost more than 10 billion yuan (US.2 billion) to complete, will include two connections across the Huangpu River, but the city still hasn't decided whether it will cross the waterway with bridges or tunnels. During a groundbreaking ceremony at Wujiaochang area in Yangpu District yesterday, Mayor Han Zheng announced the establish-ment of Shanghai Middle-Ring Road Construction and Development Co, with registered capital of 4 billion yuan. The company will raise investment for and manage construction of the express-way. Also yesterday, city officials announced that a four-meter-deep "sinking square" will be built at Wujiaochang by March of 2005. Wal-Mart Stores Inc has chosen the area to launch its first outlet in Shanghai. |
