INCIDENTS involving confusion between departure terminals are also common when people go to railway stations to catch trains. In many cities in China, there are two railway stations and sometimes more. According to a recent report from Nanfang Zhoumo, a traveler missed his train because he went to the wrong station in Guangzhou, in South China's Guangdong Province. He rushed to the Guangzhou Railway Station but the train was actually leaving from the Guangzhou East Railway Station. A motorcycle driver told him that many drivers made money by carrying confused commuters between stations. The report also cited a similar incident in Shanghai. On February 17, 2002, Liu Hongxiang, a traveller from Hangzhou, in East China's Zhejiang Province, did not find out his train was leaving from Shanghai South Railway Station until arriving at Shanghai Railway Station. However, he managed to get to the correct station on time with the help of a kind driver. He wrote a letter to the then mayor of Shanghai Chen Liangyu. Chen reportedly responded by suggesting station's addresses be printed on the tickets so as to better provide convenience to travellers. The Shanghai South Railway Station has since undergone a revamping project, and all its trains have been moved to another temporary station. Yet, there is still a station called Shanghai West Railway Station, and no address or any signs can be found on tickets to warn passengers. The report urged relevant departments to gear up to take measures to provide a better service. A ticket can also be considered as a contract between passengers and railway transportation departments, and the departments shoulder legal responsibility when they ransintosconflict with passengers on this problem. |
