Adefending champion Juventus consolidated its lead in the Italian Serie A with a costly 2-0 victory over eight-man crosstown rival Torino on Saturday. While moving six points clear of Inter Milan, La Juve lost key players Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet to injury ahead of Wednesday's Cham-pions League quarterfinal against FC Barcelona. Czech midfielder Nedved limped off the field with a bruised right knee, following a rough tackle in the 16th minute. Trezeguet, the French striker, dislocated his left shoulder while going for a diving header in the 30th. Juventus doctors later said Trezeguet will need 10 days to recover, definitely missing the crucial match with the Spanish powerhouse. Nedved would be a questionable starter. Torino had three players ejected and four cautioned in the traditionally tense Turin "Derby" while Juventus ended the match one player down. Saturday's home win at Delle Alpi stadium lifted La Juve to 60 points. Third-place AC Milan suffered a devastating 0-1 loss at Parma in a late match, slipping eight points behind Juventus and possibly out of contention for the title with seven rounds left. A late heeled goal by Brazilian striker Adriano sank the Milan team while moving Parmasintosa 45-point tie with fourth-place Lazio. In Germany, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern all had one thing in common on Saturday - late goals decided exciting matches full of ups and downs. And in Leverkusen, German great Juergen Kohler showed luck is still on his side, the kind that allowed him to win every major championship as a player from the World Cup to the Champions League. His debut as sports director ended with the demotion-threatened club blasting Hertha Berlin 4-1 behind Germany forward Oliver Neuville's double. The matches that were decided by late goals included Munich drawing 2-2 to Hannover 96, Dortmund's 2-3 loss to Werder Bremen, Stutt-gart's 3-2 win against Energie Cottbus and Kaiserslautern splitting 1-1 with VfL Bochum. Hamburg also edged Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 and Nuremberg held Schalke 0-0. |
