Sales of digital cameras in China have grown much quicker than expected since the beginning of the year, driving analysts to raise their forecast to 900,000 from 700,000 units for the year.

World's leading digital camera makers, such as Olympus and Sony, have increased their sales target in China, changing their initial plan to use the country only as a production center.

Japan-based Olympus Optical Co said it will invest US million to expand its existing facility in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, sintosa global digital camera and upmarket camera production complex.

Olympus plans to make one third of its digital cameras in China, said Yang Wenlei, vice general manager of Olympus (China) Investment Co Ltd, hoping sales of its digital camera products in China will reach 1 million units this year.

Eastman Kodak Co, Fuji Photo Film Co and Sony Corp have also started making digital cameras in China, in a bid to get a foothold in one of the world's fastest-growing camera markets.

In the past five years, China's digital camera market has seen a growth of more than 50 percent in unit sales. Sales in 2002 more than doubled to 396,000 units.

Analysts attributed the strong growth to rising availability of digital camera products and related imaging services.

The Chinese government began phasing out import quotas on camera products at the beginning of 2003, a move analysts expect to further propel growth.

Meanwhile, Kodak and Fuji, the world's leading suppliers of photographic films, are locked in a head-on competition in China's nas-cent digital imaging market amid the increasing popu-larity of digital cameras.

Kodak, which has set up 1,300 digital-imaging outlets in China, is aggressively expanding its network.

"The rapidly growing demand for digital-imaging services in China's big cities has attracted an increasing number of investors," said Jacky Chan, general mana-ger at Kodak (China) Co Ltd.

Japan-based Fuji Photo Film, Kodak's rival, has invested more than 150 million yuan (US.12 million) in promotional campaigns for its digital services during the past two years. The company is also planning to increase the number of Fuji digital imaging express stores in China to 1,000 this year.
