The Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration launched a safety check campaign on ships in local waterways, targeting passenger ships in particular, to guarantee safety during the coming weeklong Labor Day holiday. The move, which will run through April 30, follows a call from the Ministry of Communications earlier this month. According to Zhou Zhengbao, spokesman for the administration, the city will also launch several small firefighting and evacuation drills on ships some time this month, with the exact date yet to be set. "Poor knowledge about the ship structure and standard process of loading and unloading goods is a large problem for many crews," said Zhou. "Some crews are poor at handling emergencies." The administration doesn't release information on the number of accidents that occur in local waterways. So far, administration officials have inspected 23 passenger ships and report-ed 69 infractions. Three ships failed an emergency drill held by the administration. |
