Officials from WHO to visit city

Officials from the World Health Organization have agreed to visit Shanghai to inspect the local health situation and offer guidance on controlling and treating SARS "in the near future," city officials announced yesterday.

"We are currently doing a report for WHO officials," Peng Jing, vice director of the Shanghai Health Bureau, told a press conference yesterday, "but they have yet to set a schedule for their visit."

As of noon yesterday, four supected patients were still quarantined in local hospitals. Two of the patients are from overseas, including a Chinese-American and one Hong Kong child who is being treated at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center.

The patients "do not exhibit the precise symptoms established by the WHO for severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS," Peng said.

According to the city's public health authorities, there is only one confirmed case of SARS in Shanghai - a 40-year-old woman, who has been receiving treatment at the Shanghai Infectious Disease Hospital since early this month.

"Her temperature has been normal for several days and she can breath by herself," Peng said.

The city has set up 110 monitoring stations at local hospitals to identify any possible cases of SARS.

"To avoid missing any possible SARS cases, people with suspected symptoms will be hospitalized immediately," Peng added. "Normally, we can draw a conclusion within 48 hours."

She said close relatives of suspected patients are required to stay home for 10 days to undergo testing and avoid spreading the disease.

The city will begin holding weekly press conference to offer updates on the SARS situation in Shanghai from now on, officials announced yesterday.

While SARS isn't a major medical problem in Shanghai so far, the impact of the outbreak in other parts of the country on the tour industry continues to grow.

Yesterday, major travel agencies across the city stopped offering package tours to Hong Kong, which has been hard hit by the disease.

Local officials denied foreign media reports yesterday that they ordered the suspension of tours to Hong Kong.

Local travel agents claimed that the move won't affect their business too much as very few locals are interested in visiting the special administrative region at the moment.

"We have had almost no customers registering tours to Hong Kong, swheresthe disease is reported to be very serious," said Wang Yan with Shanghai Airlines Tours International Co Ltd.

The Lionstar, a cruise ship belonging to Star Cruises, has canceled a planned voyage to Hong Kong that was set to depart the city on May 1.

"We are explaining the situation to our customers, and suggest they travel to other regions or countries, such as Macau and Japan," said Wang Zhicheng, an official with the Shanghai China International Travel Service Co Ltd, local agent for the Lionstar tour.

With the outbreak of SARS in southern China, rumors quickly spread across the city that six local venues were "dangerous places," including Plaza 66 on Nanjing Road, the HSBC building in Lujiazui and the Xintiandi entertainment complex, which has many migrant employees from Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

However, workers and officials at those venues said the rumors are not true.

"No one has been found infected with the mysterious disease in Xintiandi," a public relations official with Xintiandi said.
