Shanghai No 1 Construction Company started work on a pedestrian underground passage at the junction of Nanjing and Xizang roads yesterday. The passage, scheduled to be completed by October, will connect the People's Square Metro Station, Shanghai No 1 Department Store and the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall.

　　The existing overpass at the place will be dismantled at the end of this month. Meanwhile, a temporary elevated walkway linking No 1 Department Store and New World Department Store will be built before May 1, especially for visitors who will throng the city during the week-long May 1 Labor Day holiday.
