An alleged arms dealer and reputed gangster pulled the fuse on explosives he was carrying, blowing himself up in a big ball of fire following a tense, six-hour standoff with police in Taipei, Taiwan. The event unfolded late on Wednesday when some 20 police officers surrounded the home of 41-year-old Huang Chin-seng seeking to arrest him on charges of making explosives and selling handguns to gangsters. He came out of the house holding the explosives and threatening to kill himself, policeman Shih Chun-hsiung said yesterday. Seeking to calm him, police sent two officers posing as television reporters to hear his story of how his gangster friends had set him up, Shih said. TV broadcasters yesterday ran footage showing the officers holding out microphones while Huang waved a wine bottle as he talked. He told the disguised officers, "You have 50 seconds. Now run." Huang pulled the fuse and was instantly blown up in a big ball of fire while the policemen ran for their lives. |
