Best served with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks, Buffalo wings leave most people licking their fingers and begging for more. Whether baked or fried, Buffalo wings have not only become ingrained1 in America's national food culture, but have spread with increasing popularity worldwide. Although there are conflicting2 versions of the Buffalo wings legend, most give credit to the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, as the original home of the wings, and to Teressa Bellisimo as their inventor. Nevertheless, even the various members of the Bellisimo family, who owned the Anchor Bar, recall the night that changed their lives somewhat differently. The most popular version goes that Teressa's son Dominic and his friends came to the bar looking for a quick, late-night snack. Teressa was preparing to make chicken stock with a bunch of wings, and improvised.3 But Teresa's husband, Frank, told a different version of the story that involves an accidental delivery of chicken wings. Faced with this unexpected resource, he asked Teressa to do something with them. Either way, Teressa Bellisimo seems to have stumbled upon a combination of delicious flavors almost by accident and, in doing so, created a snack that has been tantalizing4 taste buds for nearly four decades. |
