STYLISH and fashionably self-assured: that's what the world's large fashion fair "CPD Woman" held in Dusseldorf is telling us.

Mysticism and romanticism, sport and folklore, kitsch and coolness - the only constants are the contrasts. The fashion formula is all in the style mix.

Here is an alphabet for the new fashion this autumn/winter.

A - Art Deco. Geometric patterns, wrought iron ornaments, ties and patchwork designs, all reminiscent of the 1930s.

B - Bomber jackets. Sports influence provide the inspiration for sporty bomber jacket styles. Typical here are retro jackets with knitted waistbands and functional pockets.

C - Cocooning. The need for protection is catered to by furry effects in the Inuit style.

D - Decoration. Artistic and hand-crafted influences create individual accents like floral ornaments, embroidery.

E - Expressive Mix. Folklore, sport, vintage and tradition - only when mixed together does the new look emerge.

F - Furs. Natural and coloured fur looks, imitation clipped furs and genuine sheepskin features in all sorts of variations.

G - Gothic. Punk rock in black denim with shirts or lace in that Victorian style for evening couture.

  H - Healthland Looks.

I - Inuit (the indigenous name for Eskimos). Fur-trimmed jackets with thick parka hoods in arctic white contrasting with brightly coloured borders.

J - Japonais. Japanese influences give rise to butterfly motifs and floral creepers.

K - Kubism. 1930s style dresses featuring cubist patterns.

  L - Lindbergh Bomber Jackets.

M - Marnie. Tippi Hedren's style in Hitchcock's film version of the Daphne du Maurier novel 'Marnie' provides perfect elegance for figure-hugging suits and clean-cut dresses.

N - Nordic. Adapted from the herdsmen of Nordic countries: quilted jackets reminiscent of polar expeditions, thick woolen hats with ear flaps, fur and leather lace-up boots.

O - Oversized. Oversized bomber jackets and parkas, cargo pants and jogging bottoms.

P - Ponchos. Ponchos casually draped over the shoulders in sleek planes with long fringes or fur trims.

Q - Quilts. Thick quilts provide the inspiration for jackets and coats, conveying cozy warmth plus convincing lightness.

  R - Rustic Knits.

S - Sexy Shirts. Plunging necklines, off-the-shoulder looks, gloss and wrap-over effects and lace-up details upgrade shirtssintossexy tops for evening wear.

  T - Tapisserie Designs.

  U - Urbanwear.

V - Violet. Deep dark violet is the colour of melancholy and of times past.

W - Workwear. Inspirations from 1940s workers' clothing, functional details like zippers and flap pockets.

X - XS and XL. Shirts can be extra tight while cargo pants and parkas provide comfy leg room.

Y - Yeti Coats. Long and shaggy, in real or imitation fur, Yeti coats are ideal partners against the cold.

Z - Zip-Up Lumber Jackets. Short zip-up workers' jackets as worn by the likes of rebel-without-a-cause Marlon Brando in his early days.
