Anson Carter scored in overtime on Sunday as Olympic champion Canada came back from a two-goal deficit to win its first Hockey World Championship title in six years by beating Sweden 3-2 in Helsinki, Finland. The Canadians, undefeated in the tournament, had to wait 10 agonizing minutes for Carter's goal, which he slipped under Mikael Tellqvist's pad, to be validated in a video replay. "It's the best goal of my career," Carson said. "To score in overtime period to win gold for your country, I don't think it gets bigger than that." But the referee stopped play as it was unclear whether the puck had crossed the goal line, or whether it had been trapped under the goalie's pad. Sweden coach Hardy Nilsson was unconvinced the goal was valid. "I haven't seen the replay yet," he said. "I'm still not sure the puck was 100 percent in and I want to see it before I feel 100 percent sure that we are the losers." Carter, Canadian coach Andy Murray and the rest of the team waited awkwardly along the side boards for several excruciating minutes before the goal was allowed. "I saw it go in," Carter said. "But to be honest I really was hoping the ref had seen it the way I did because I twisted my knee in celebration so I'm not sure I could have gone on if the goal hadn't counted." International Ice Hockey Federation officials watched the replay from seven different angles, zooming in a running the best shot frame by frame, which explained the long delay. Officials said the puck was "barely but visibly" two centimeters inside the goal line. |
