Operations at the world's third-busiest port were running at a quarter capacity yesterday as a strike by South Korean truck drivers entered its fourth day. Electronic firms said they were losing millions of dollars in potential revenue. Negotiations between government officials and the Korean Cargo Workers Federation union made progress on Sunday but failed to resolve the dispute over demands by the drivers for higher pay and lower fuel taxes, local media reports said. About 700 drivers were taking part in the strike. The government and the union were scheduled to resume negotiations today. Samsung Electronics Co, the world's biggest maker of computer memory chips, said it stands to lose roughly 100 billion won (US million) in revenue a day if operations in Busan continue to be disrupted by a strike. "If this strike is prolonged, it could be a significant problem for Samsung," spokesman James Chung said. |
