Rough weekend on local waterways

Maritime officials in Shanghai are still cleaning up following two shipping accidents in local waterway over the weekend, including a collision between an oil tanker and a cargo ship at the mouth of the Yangtze River on Saturday.

Officials still don't know how much oil spilled into the river in that accident, the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration said yesterday.

Luckily, no one was injured in either of the collisions, said administration spokesman Zhou Zhengbao.

"The oil spill is now under control, but the amount of oil is still under investigation," said Zhou, referring to Saturday's collision between Huanghe 70 and Xinyun.

Huanghe 70, an oil tanker traveling from Dalian in Liaoning Province to Xiangshan in Zhejiang Province, was carrying 2,599 tons of diesel oil.

Officials said that during the collision with the 6,000-ton Xinyun, two of Huanghe 70's cabins, which store 300 tons of diesel oil, were broken.

"The two ships are now under repair, while the case is still under investigation," said Zhou.

Bad weather was blamed for the collision.

"In this period, fog is frequently seen at the mouth of the Yangtze River, which creates a great deal of concern for navigation," said Zhou.

On Friday, 40 sailors from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea fell into the Yellow Sea when their cargo ship Gumbong collided with a Belize vessel named Yue Cheng near Jiangsu Province. Yue Cheng was heading from Shanghai to Yantai in Shandong Province.

Officials said local salvage workers rescued the crew, and they were sent back home yesterday after a short stay in Shanghai.

Gumbong now is floating at the site about 100 knots from the mouth of the Yangtze.

"We sent a helicopter to watch the site and found nothing spilled from the unsunken Gumbong," said Zhou.
