Attacks on US targets

  LONDON - Suicide bombers in the Saudi capital killed at least 29 people, Saudi officials said last Tuesday, making the attack one of the biggest suspected al Qaeda strikes apparently aimed at Americans.

  Following is a chronology of some of the worst attacks on the United States and US targets abroad in the last 20 years.

  April 1983 - Suicide car bombing of US embassy in Beirut kills 63 people, including 17 Americans.

  October 1983 - A suicide car bomb attack by radical Muslims on the headquarters of the US military peace-keeping force in Lebanon kills 241 US servicemen. A simultaneous attack on a French base in Beirut kills 58 paratroopers.

  December 1985 - An Arab suicide hit squad attacks US and Israeli check-in desks at international airports in Rome and Vienna simultaneously. The attacks claim a total of 20 lives, including four guerrillas.

  December 1988 - A Pan American World Airways Boeing 747 crashes on the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 259 people aboard when a bomb on board explodes. Eleven people in Lockerbie are also killed.

  February 1993 - Six people are killed and more than 1,000 injured when a bomb in a van explodes under the twin 110-storey towers of the World Trade Centre.

  April 1995 - Car bomb destroys Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. Two American extremists are convicted.

  November 1995 - In Saudi Arabia, a bomb attack on a US-run military centre in Riyadh kills seven people, five of them Americans.

  June 1996 - Fuel truck bomb kills 19 American soldiers and wounds nearly 400 people at a US military complex in Khobar near the Saudi Arabian oil city of Dhahran.

  July 1996 - Bomb explodes at a concert during the Atlanta Olympic Games, killing two people and wounding 110.

  August 1998 - Truck bombs explode at the US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The bombs kill 224 people, including 12 Americans, and injure thousands. All but 10 of the deaths are in Nairobi, where damage is the worst.

  October 2000 - An explosives-laden rubber raft rams a US destroyer and explodes in the port of Aden, Yemen, killing 17 US sailors.

  September 2001 - Three hijacked planes crash into major US landmarks, destroying New York's twin World Trade Centre towers and plunging into the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane crashes in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people are killed.

  May 2003 - Dozens of people die in three suicide bombings on Western housing compounds in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, in suspected al Qaeda attacks.
