A CHINESE amateur mountain-eering expedition reached the summit of the world's highest peak, Mount Qomolangma, from the north slope in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on May 21. Chinese climbers Awang Luobo and Zhaxi Ciren, both from Tibet, reached the 8,848-metre peak at 1:40pm (Beijing time). Nima Ciren also from Tibet, the deputy climbing captain, made it to the top minutes later. "This is a great victory through the joint efforts of people from China's Han and Tibetan nationalities," Nima said at the summit. The climbing process was transmitted live by China's national broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV). A Japanese expedition became the first team this year to reach the summit from the north slope, at 11:15am (Beijing time) on Tuesday. Two sherpa helpers from a US team also made it to the top, at 12:00am (Beijing time) on the same day. More than 60 teams are making attempts on Mount Qomolangma this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the first scaling of the summit, by Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal on May 29, 1953. |
