Anderson makes history on debut

James Anderson became the youngest England bowler to take five wickets on debut as the 20-year-old inspired the home side to an innings and 92-run victory over Zimbabwe inside three days in the first cricket test match at Lord's in London.

Anderson ripped through the first innings in a 14-ball spell to return 5 for 73 as Zimbabwe was bowled out for 147 in its first innings in front of 20,000 spectators - the biggest crowd of the rain-hit test.

He was wicketless in his 15 overs in the second, but watched Mark Butcher (4-60) and another debutant, Anthony McGrath (3-16), bowl England to victory as the tourists were shot out for 233.

The win inside three days put England in firm control of the two-match series with a 1-0 lead.

Butcher, who topscored with 137 in England's imposing 472, put in a superb allround performance, and claimed a match-haul of 5-68.

Anderson's efforts were the best by an England debutant in eight years since Dominic Cork's 7-43 against the West Indies here in 1995.

England skipper Nasser Hussain ensured Anderson's name was immediately among the other great England bowling performances on the famous panels of the home locker room.

"We took a bit of tape and put his name on the board at the tea break," Hussain said.

In Port-Of-Spain, Trinidad, Australia swept to another comfortable victory over the West Indies in Saturday's fourth one-day international, notching its 21st straight success and a winning 4-0 lead in the seven-match rubber.

Man of the Match Adam Gilchrist's assured 84 and Michael Clarke's blazing, unbeaten 55 off 40 balls launched Australia's formidable 286 for five wickets off 50 overs.

The West Indies lost early wickets and its pursuit never ignited, despite Chris Gayle's topscore of 84 and captain Brian Lara's 40. The home team was bowled out for 219 in the 46th over to lose by 67 runs. The visitors launched their winning platform through their batsmen. All contributed to the large total after captain Ricky Ponting won the toss for the first time in the series.
