Saturday will be a bonanza for local sightseeing buffs - the Shanghai Tourism Administrative Commission is offering free access to six local tourism spots and up to 50 percent off on tickets to 27 other sites. Meanwhile, the Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center will sell its ticket package, which combines tour bus fees and scenic spot tickets, at discounts of up to 42 percent on the day. "The program aims to encourage local residents to explore those scenic sites, which they are familiar with but seldom visit," Yang Qinghong, chief of the commission's domestic tourism promotion depart-ment, said yesterday. "It also aims to promote local sites which have seen sluggish business for two months due to the SARS epidemic," Yang said. The discounts are valid for Saturday only, and the commission has no plans as yet to adopt the measure as a routine. Among the free sites are the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, Shanghai Museum, Soong Ching Ling Cemetery and Longhua Martyrs' Cemetery. "We will lose a day's earning, but it will bring back our visitors," said Li Feng, an official of the Shanghai Museum, which usually charges 20 yuan (US.40) for entry. According to Li, the museum receives at least 2,500 visitors per day on average, though the number fell to 800 or less per day due to SARS. Some sites, such as the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Shanghai Circus World and Shanghai Wild Animal Park, will offer 50 percent discount. The announcement has caught locals' fancy. "It is an attractive offer, since the tickets for some sites are expensive," said Wang Wenjie, a public relations officer for a Japanese company, who plans to visit the aquarium on the weekend. "A ticket for 55 yuan is fair." |
