City to aid graduating students
http://www.sina.com.cn 2003/06/19 11:31  Shanghai Daily

The local educational department will take measures to help graduating university students find jobs, according to a Shanghai government press conference yesterday, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

The measures include giving priority to graduating students when recruiting civilian workers and encouraging students to sign employment contracts with employers as soon as possible.

The Shanghai Education Commission and Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau are working out a plan to provide job training to unemployed graduating students to improve their competitiveness.

Shanghai will also offer preferential policies to encourage and support graduating students in starting their own business.

The Labor and Social Security Bureau, together with the Shanghai Personnel Bureau, will strengthen supervision on recruitment activities to protect the legal rights of graduating university students. Employers found breaking employment agreements or neglecting to sign labor contracts with graduating students will be punished.

The local public security department will simplify procedures for graduating students from outside the city to establish registered permanent residence in the city.

There are 83,120 graduating university students in Shanghai this year, an increase of 31 percent from a year before, with the proportion signing job contracts with employers to date comparable with last year's figure.
