China expectedly stormed into the final of the AFC Women's Championship in Thailand where it will meet the Democratic People's Republic of Korea tomorrow. Bai Jie was on target twice for the Chinese as they beat South Korea 3-1 in an entertaining semifinal late yesterday. DPRK beat Japan 3-0 in an earlier match. South Korea will now play Japan for the third place. Whoever wins that game will qualify automatically for the Women's World Cup in the United States, while the loser will play Mexico in a playoff. The Chinese played a more controlled, passing game while South Korea favored a more direct approach, looking to feed the ball upfront to 16-year-old Park Eun-sun. China took the lead after just 12 minutes. Bai Jie volleyed one from the right which beat the Korean keeper Jung Ho-jung. China doubled its lead seven minutes later when Bai beat the offside trap and calmly lifted the ball over the Korean keeper. Korea's Kim Ji-eun slammed one in the 26th minute to reduce the deficit. But Sun Wen sealed the match for China with a strike in the 88th minute. DPRK's victory means it has also qualified for the Women's World Cup later this year, irrespective of the result in the final. "We are very pleased to qualify for the World Cup," said DPRK coach Ri Song-gun after the game. "We will do our best to improve over the coming months so that we can show the full strength of Asian football to the world." |
