Roger Clemens shut down the New York Mets and again showed why he's one of the game's greatest pitchers. A few hours and a bus ride later, Brandon Claussen gave the New York Yankees a promising glimpse into their future. Claussen allowed two runs - one earned - and pitched into the seventh inning in his major league debut, and Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter led off with consecutive homers as the Yankees held off the Mets 9-8 on Saturday night for a sweep of their two-ballpark, day-night doubleheader. In the first game at Yankee Stadium, Clemens earned his 301st victory, and Japanese slugger Hideki Matsui hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs in the Yankees' 7-1 win. Matsui went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the second game, and 6-for-7 with six RBIs in the two games. The Yankees built a 9-0 lead in the nightcap at Shea Stadium, only to see the Mets nearly come all the way back. Raul Gonzalez's three-run double off Mariano Rivera in the eighth cut it to 9-8. Rivera finished for his 13th save in 14 chances, giving the Yan-kees their sixth straight win. In other interleague games, it was San Francisco 8, Oakland 7 (in 10 innings); Chicago White Sox 7, Chica-go Cubs 6; Cincinnati 5, Cleveland 4; Montreal 4, Toronto 2; Houston 2, Texas 0; Tampa Bay 9, Atlanta 7; Philadelphia 9, Baltimore 5; Minnesota 5, Milwaukee 2; Florida 10, Boston 9; St Louis 13, Kansas City 9; Arizona 7, Detroit 0; Anaheim 3, Los Angeles 1; and San Diego 6, Seattle 0. In the only National Lea-gue game, it was Colorado 5, Pittsburgh 4. |
