The Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau is planning to expand its recruitment of quarantine dogs to other canine pets after receiving a Springer Spaniel donated by his owner.

Last weekend, the 1 1/2-year-old dog "Happy" arrived at Pudong International Airport where it will receive three months of training, including obeying orders and distinguishing smells.

Since March, two professional sniffer dogs have been employed at the airport to detect banned substances such as fruits, meat and aquatic products from the luggage of travelers entering the country.

Insgroupsto ensure maximum efficiency, the two dogs are only allowed to work three hours a day during which time they can sniff through passengers out from five to six flights, officials said.

However, about 180 flights land at the airport daily, and the sniffer dogs are unable to cope with workload.

"We are looking for more such animals," said Zhu Weizu, director of the bureau's branch at the airport. "The arrival of Happy will surely help us scan more luggage and detect more prohibited objects."

According to donor Huang Yuyan, Happy, who arrived from Canada as a 3-month-old, is a champion canine with an illustrious pedigree.

"Happy is just like my child. I hope he can do good for society and have a better future," said Huang, who entrusted the Shanghai Small Animal Protection Association to donate Happy to an institution which would need him the most.

The association, which cares for abandoned pets, is now considering training more animals and donating them to government departments for special use, like Happy.
