Movie stars lend their voices
http://www.sina.com.cn 2003/07/08 11:20  Shanghai Daily

Local movie lovers will soon be able to enjoy the Chinese dubbed version of "X2: X-Men United" - one of the latest Hollywood blockbusters - with its print arriving at the Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio yesterday.

Professional dubbing artists from the studio will spend about a month to complete the Chinese version, but the nationwide screening schedule for the movie is yet to be decided.

Founded in 1957, the studio is China's only professional film dubbing center, giving Chinese expressions to many classic foreign movies, like Jane Eyre and Zorro.

"I enjoy dubbed films more since it's a little hard to catch up with the subtitles. Importantly, the dubbing artists do a good job, allowing me to understand the movie," said Wang Xuebin, a 53-year-old retiree.

However, earlier this month, the studio missed out on the dubbing assignments for two other imported films: "The Matrix: Reloaded" and "Finding Nemo."

The distributor of the films, the China Film Group Corp, is doing the job itself and, in a novel move, has gone ahead and hired big-names film stars to do the voice-over.

Li Yapeng, a top actor, will be the voice of Neo, the leading man in Matrix, while actor Zhang Guoli and actress Xu Fan have been invited to dub as Marlin and Dory, two main fish characters in the new Disney cartoon.

With film distributors opting for this supposedly lucrative way of dubbing, the studio is facing big challenges.

"We'd like to hear different voices," said Wu Hehu, marketing director of Shanghai United Cinema Line. "Sometimes one artist from the studio has to dub several characters in a movie. Listening to the same voice again and again can be boring."

Wu claimed that professional dubbing artists are not seen in Hollywood, where usually big names are invited to do the task when dubbing is required, like in Disney cartoon films.

"Usually film stars are well-equipped with acting techniques, which helps them get into the skin of their characters easily," said Wu, adding some stars also have distinctive voices, which adds color to the film's characters, and can draw more audiences into cinemas.

Qiao Zheng, studio director and famed dubbing artist, thinks otherwise.

"Dubbing a foreign film is a kind of art reproduction. Our aim is to make the dubbed version as close to the original as possible. This means dubbing artists need to spend a long time training for harmonious cooperation, which is unlikely with big stars," said Qiao.

Moviegoers are also expecting something new.

"If an actor or actress has a good voice and speaks Mandarin well, they should try (dubbing). It's rather attractive," said Eve Zhou, 27.
