THE works of the late Spanish artist Eduardo Urculo are to be shown as the first post-SARS exhibition in the Shanghai Art Museum.

　　The exhibition is part of a Spanish Art Promotion Project and celebrates the 30th anniversary of Sino-Spanish diplomatic relations.

　　The artist died in Madrid on March 31 at the age of 65. More than 50 of Urculo's works since the 1950s are on display.

　　His early Expressionistic works depicted real scenery or characters using thick colours and forceful lines, reflecting his concern for nature and society.

　　The artist went through a change of style in the 1960s, after being strongly influenced by the Pop style. Erotic themes from this period continued into the 1970s.

　　Urculo liked to depict strange fantasies involving female nudes and body parts and achieved new breakthroughs in artistic conception.

　　In the 1980s, Urculo broadened his choice of subjects and mode of expression. The artist himself became the hero, appearing in hat and overcoat, either in the studio, or touring. Urculo kept up his passion for travelling, portraying cities around the world, expressing his feelings as a passer-by.

　　Urculo started on sculptures in 1984. His sculptures followed the travelling theme seen in his paintings. Still lifes, such as suitcases and travellers' outfits appeared as narrative tools. Many of his sculptures are on public show in Spain.

　　The Shanghai exhibition runs until August 3. Up to July 21 it occupies the exhibition hall on the ground floor. After July 22 they move to the corridor of the second floor.

　　The Shanghai Art Museum has released its exhibition schedule for the last quarter of the year.

　　The major exhibition will be a private collection from Germany which includes masterpieces from the Renaissance to post-World War II.

　　The Art Museum will be the only venue hosting the exhibition in Asia.

　　The third abstract art show as well as some solo shows of outstanding domestic artists will also be seen in the Art Museum.

　　Nearing the end of the year, the final major event of the year will be the Shanghai Grand Art Show. This year the show is entitled "Home" and will focus on environmental design, including space design, furniture, decoration and utensils - even clothing.
