Visitors to the Great Wall in the Beijing area face a fine of up to 30,000 yuan (US,600) if they climb on unau-thorized parts of the world heritage site. Under a 23-article regulation effective to-morrow, only areas of the Great Wall listed as "tourist" sites will be open to the public. The Beijing area contains 629 kilometers of the Great Wall, including some of the most historically valuable sections built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), said an official of Beijing's cultural relics bureau. The Great Wall was first built in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty, and most parts have survived essentially unharmed. But most sections of the Great Wall in Beijing have long been overgrown, and are unprotected or "Wild Wall" as they are commonly known. Human activities like climbing would undermine sections of the Wild Wall not under proper protection, said the official. The regulation says that anyone climbing the Wild Wall without legal authorization can be fined from 200 to 30,000 yuan. |
