Blues launch the new revolution

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a leftover from last season's Chelsea side, scored the winner in the 88th minute in a historic 2-1 victory on Sunday at Liverpool.

Hasselbaink came on as a substitute as he tries to save his place amid more than a half dozen millionaire players who have joined the Blues in the last month under new billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.

The Dutchman scored from 16 meters as he broke down the center and beat Jerzy Dudek with a low shot.

The win was only Chelsea's second in 44 years at Anfield and its first at Anfield in a Premier League game. It was also the first time Liverpool has lost a home opener in 41 years.

"It's a new Chelsea with lots of new players," Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri said. "But I saw lots of our old character."

In two other Premier League games on Sunday, it was Charlton 0, Manchester City 3; and Leeds 2, Newcastle 2.

Juan Sebastian Veron, who moved to Chelsea from Manchester United on a 15-million pound (US million) transfer, gave Chelsea a 1-0 lead in the 25th, scoring on a strike from 12 meters off a cross from Dane Jesper Gronkjaer.

Sitting in the stands, Abramovich jumped to his feet to cheer on one of his new signings.

Liverpool got lucky with a late, second-half penalty from Michael Owen to draw level.

Owen shot wide to his left with his initial spot kick, but referee Steve Bennett ruled Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini had come off the line before the kick. That gave Owen a second chance.

This time he connected high into the top of the net in the 79th with Cudicini diving unsuccessfully to his right.

Abramovich has spent about 75 million pounds to sign players like Veron, Joe Cole and Damien Duff.

Chelsea dominated much of the play and had more control of the ball. The Blues were able to pick holes through Liverpool with Owen, Harry Kewell and Emile Heskey seldom seeing the ball.

Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier faulted his team's poor finishing, but credited Chelsea.

"We had enough chances ourselves to score," said Houllier, who said the finishing was not at the "same level" as the rest of the team.

"We played a very good team. We have to acknowledge they are a good team and they played well."

Manchester City got off to a winning start on Sunday, clipping London-based Charlton 3-0. Newcastle had to settle for a 2-2 come-from-behind draw at Leeds with two Magpie goals from Alan Shearer.

City, picked by some to finish in the top six, took the lead on Nicolas Anelka's 13th-minute penalty, and stretched the margin to 2-0 when Antoine Sibierski scored in the 23rd.

China's Sun Jihai wrapped up the scoring in the 83rd, a goal that came 12 minutes after Charlton's Mark Fish was sent off on a red card.

Former England captain Shearer did all the work for the Magpies, giving them the lead on a penalty in the 20th. After Mark Viduka (24th) and Alan Smith (57th) gave Leeds a 2-1 lead, Shearer scored in the 88th to salvage a point for last season's third-place club.

In Scotland, Dunfermline and Hibernian each got victories on Sunday on the second weekend of Premier League play.

Dunfermline won 2-0 at Dundee on a goal by Stevie Crawford and an own-goal by Dundee's Lee Wilkie. Garry O'Connor got the winner for Hibernian in second-half injury time to beat Hearts 1-0.

  On Saturday, it was: Aber-deen 2, Rangers 3; Celtic 5, Dundee United 0; Kilmarnock 2, Partick 1; and Livingston 1, Motherwell 0.
