China's Teng Haibin and Japanese Takehiro Kashima scored identical scores of 9.762 points to share the gold medal of the men's pommel horse at the 37th world gymnastics championships on Saturday in Anaheim, California.

Teng, who finished fourth in the 2001 worlds, came out first for the top score, which survived the challenges of all seven other finalists, including his teammate Xiao Qin, who fell from the horse during the routine for a miserable 9.350 points.

Russian Nikolai Kryukov finished third with 9.725, while reigning world champion Marius Daniel Urzich of Romania finished fifth with 9.650 points.

Paul Hamm of the United States won the men's all-around gold medal, the first-ever all-around world medal for an American.

Hamm, who finished a lowly seventh in the 2001 worlds, scored 57.774 points to the cheers of the home fans, beating Olympic silver medalist Yang Wei of China to second with 57.710, and Japanese Hiroyuki Tomita took the bronze medal with 57.435, including event-high 9.737 and 9.687 on the pommel horse and the parallel bars.

It was the first-ever all-around world medal for US men gymnasts during the past 100-year history of the world gymnastics championships.

"It's been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. To be a world champion is such an incredible thing," said Hamm.

"I would have been satisfied with silver. It was so close, coming down to the last event."

Through the six-event finals, a neck-to-neck battle was contested between the two as Hamm won the pommel horse, the parallel bar and the horizontal bar while Yang had an upper hand on the floor exercise, the rings and the vault.

After Yang finished his last routine on the floor with 9.662, Hamm must score 9.711 for the top honor from his horizontal bar perfor-mance, which the judges awarded 9.775 instead, against the second-best score of 9.687 for Tomita and third-best of 9.612 for Yang.

"I knew myself and I knew I needed to hit the routine perfectly. I knew I needed to score between a 9.7 and 9.8," said Hamm, who has a twin brother in the US squad who finished second in the team competition.

On finishing second, China's Yang, the Asian Games all-around champion, said: "I'm very happy with how I did today, but the results were different from what I expected.

"I'm disappointed for myself, but at the same time I congratulate Paul for getting the gold," Yang said.

Hamm, a two-time national champion who was the youngest US men gymnast in Sydney at age of 17, scored 9.625, 9.700, 9.475, 9.537,9.662 and 9.775 from the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar, where Yang had 9.662, 9.587, 9.625, 9.637, 9.587 and 9.612 respectively.

"I made some little mistakes. It's kind of mysterious that I got the bronze medal," said Tomita, who finished fourth on rings at the 2001 worlds.

"I will try to show a more powerful performance in the future."

However, the day-high score of 9.850 was awarded to Romanian Marian Dragulescu on the vault.

"I don't want to talk about it because I don't want to jinx it," he said.
