The gastro-intestinal problems
http://www.sina.com.cn 2003/08/28 12:07  上海英文星报

DOCTOR Cai Gan at Shanghai's Shuguang Hospital says he is seeing more patients with gastro-intestinal problems.

One patient, the car driver for one of the city's top leaders, has had the condition for years: every time he feels nervous, he has to go the toilet.

The driver complained that pains in his belly and his frequent diarrohea were seriously affecting his life and job.

"What the patient is suffering from is called 'Irritable Bowel Syndrome' (IBS), which is one of the most common of gastro-intestinal diseases and the incidence of IBS is rising rapidly in recent years as people are under much heavier pressure than before," said Cai.

The incidence of IBS is 9 per cent in the US and up to 5 per cent in China. Although IBS is a functional disease, it not only causes physical suffering but also has a great impact on people's quality of life. "Most of our patients are white collar employees, businessmen, security company staff, students and others under great pressure," said Cai.

IBS can be classified into three main categories: diarrohea-predominant, diarrohea-constipation alternative and constipation-predominant. The diarrohea-predominant is the most common pattern affecting 71 per cent of all sufferers.

The main manifestation of diarrohea-predominant IBS is the onset of abdominal pain followed and relieved by diarrohea.

The chronic disease is usually induced by gastro-enteritis and can last for a couple of months or even years.

"The main factor causing the disease is a disorder of the central nervous system which controls the intestinal function and is mainly due to anxiety or a nervous condition," said Cai.

The disease is more than just a disorder of the digestive system and affects the whole body. Other conditions such as insomnia, bad eating habits or colds were also a result of the condition.

Cai explained that according to Tradition Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, the pathogenesis of diarrohea-predominant IBS is a combination of liver QI stagnation and spleen QI deficiency.

Based on Tongxie yaofang, a classic formulu used to treat diarrhea with liver QI stagnation and spleen QI deficiency, Cai has come up with a new formulu, Changjitai specifically for treating diarrohea-predominant IBS.

A random clinical study has shown that it has been beneficial in about 90 per cent of cases.
