Police yesterday arrested two men and two women - including a married couple and their daughter - and charged them with involvement in three bombings in India's financial hub.

All four suspects were arrested under India's tough anti-terrorism law. Three of them - Syed Rahim, 45, Fahimida Syed Mohammed Hanif, 37, and their daughter Farheen Rahim, 18 - were produced in a court in Mumbai.

The fourth suspect, Arshad Ansari, 26, was hospitalized due to high blood pressure.

Judge A.P. Bangale ordered them into custody until September 15. The mother and daughter wore veils over their heads as they walked into the court.

They have been charged with involvement in the August 25 bombings and a July 28 blast on a public bus in which three people were killed and 31 were wounded.

Police recovered 205 gelatin sticks, 20 detonators, 12 timers, wires and soldering machines, police said.

The suspects could face the death penalty if found guilty.

"They have been charged ... for striking terror in the minds of people and committing terrorist acts," said public prosecutor Rohini Salin.

In the August 25 explosions, two taxis packed with explosives blew up within minutes of each other, one at the Gateway of India arch - a colonial-era tourist attraction - and the other at a busy shopping complex.

Meantime, suspected Islamic rebels set off an explosion in a Himalayan tunnel in Indian Kashmir and fought gunbattles across the region as a surge of violence claimed 17 lives yesterday, police and army officials said.

A bomb went off in a tunnel on the highway connecting Srinagar and Jammu - summer and winter capitals of Jammu-Kashmir state - before bomb disposal experts could diffuse it, killing two of them and wounding two soldiers, police said.

In other violence, police firing and clashes between Hindu devotees and Muslims left a woman dead and 12 people injured during a popular Hindu festival in India's tension-prone state of Gujarat.
