Flooding along the River worsens

THE flooding along the Weihe River, a tributary of the Yellow River, is growing more serious, with the water level of the lower reaches of the Weihe River falling by only 0.3 metres during the past 33 hours from the record high of 342.46 metres reached on Tuesday.

The Weihe River, the Yellow River's largest tributary, which crosses central Shaanxi from west to east, witnessed historically high water levels caused by heavy rain. Bursting and collapse have taken place in four additional places, beyond the five sites along the embankments of the Weihe River's tributaries which were reported to have been breached last Sunday and Monday.

The Flooding Control Office of Shaanxi Province has played a full role in co-ordinating people from all walks of life to combat the flood. On Tuesday, the Office allocated 20 rubber boats, 8,000 life jackets, 100,000 gunnybags and other materials, while the number of experts on the scene reached 21.

The ministries of civil affairs and finance have allocated an emergency fund of 20 million yuan (US.4 million) and 6,500 tents to the province to help local people resettle in areas away from the flood-stricken area.

On Sept. 2, over 7,000 residents were evacuated to safe ground. By 9:00pm on Sept. 2, the dangerous situation in several parts of the embankments was brought under control.

A total of 38 people have been reported dead, with another 34 people missing, since last Thursday when continuous heavy rain hit Northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

The latest statistics released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed continuous rain had caused flooding in over 50 rivers in Shaanxi Province since Aug. 24, affecting a total of almost 5 million people in Shaanxi's 67 counties and districts.

Some 46,000 houses and 318,000 hectares of farmland were destroyed in the flood. The direct economic loss reached 3.02 billion yuan (US.8 million), according the provincial flood control department.

According to the weather forecast, the heavy rain will last until September 6, and flood prevention is still the top priority in Shaanxi, the headquarters said.

The rain also caused flooding on the Hanjiang River, one of the major tributaries of China's longest river, the Yangtze, causing floods that killed five people while leaving three others missing.

About 3,000 people and several highways were affected by the flood. Rescue and relief work is underway.

More heavy rain is expected to hit the area at the weekend, according to the weather forecast.
