THE August Monthly Tournament, held at the Shanghai Binhai Golf Club last Sunday, was part of the Consulate Cup event.

　　Liu Huijun, took the lead with 80 pars at the Fairy Lake Course of the Binhai club, breaking the record of amateur players at the club.

　　The course will be the biggest in Shanghai after 9 more holes are completed by the end of September, adding to the current 18 holes.

　　Designed by Peter Thomson, five times British Open champion, with 30 years in golf course design, the additional 9 holes are intended to provide a more challenging adventure for players.

　　Thomson plans ultimately to build the Fairy Lake Course into a 54 holes international championship golf course.

　　The club can offer a term membership for 3,600 yuan per year, providing the chance for more people to enjoy golf.

　　Wyndham G.A. Heyring FHCIMA, the Executive Director of the club said: "We want to provide people with an opportunity to play golf with greater convenience."

　　The high cost of basic membership is a barrier to attracting people to the sport. Wyndham, the former director of the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club, intended to promote the market with a price competitive edge. (Star News)
