sports VFB Stuttgart went to the top of the Bundesliga for the first time in seven years when it beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 on Saturday, while 10-man Bayern Munich lost ground by drawing 3-3 at home with Bayer Leverkusen. Kevin Kuranyi broke the deadlock and his scoring drought with a fine header in the 67th minute to secure Stuttgart's victory. Felix Magath's team, runner-up last season, still hasn't conceded a goal in six games. Although it has only scored six, Stuttgart has collected 14 points, one more than Leverkusen. Kuranyi had 15 goals last season but he had gone scoreless in the first five games. "I am glad we won and that I got my first goal of the season," Kuranyi said. "It's great that we are leaders again after such a long time." Leverkusen dropped to second and was nearly beaten by Bayern despite playing with one man more since the 57th. Yildiray Basturk tied the game in the 81st, while Michael Ballack missed a penalty for Bayern, which trailed twice. Werder Bremen moved into third by beating 1860 Munich 2-1 and VfL Wolfsburg rose to fourth with a 3-2 win in FC Cologne. In other matches, it was: SC Freiburg 2, Schalke 1; Hann-over 2, Borussia Moenchen-gladbach 0; and VfL Bochum 2, Hertha Berlin 2. Bayern dropped to fifth after settling for the draw against Leverkusen, which has not won in Munich in 10 games. The match drew 63,000 fans on the opening day of the Oktoberfest. Carsten Ramelow beat Oliver Kahn with a low, well-placed shot from 18 meters out to put Leverkusen ahead. Roy Makaay tied the score after 25 minutes - his fourth goal in three games. Two minutes later, Ballack wasted a penalty. He shot hard but Hans-Joerg Butt read the shot and dived to his right to palm the ball away. Things seemed to get worse for Bayern in the 57th when Ze Roberto was sent off after tangling with Leverkusen defender Lucio. Franca hit Leverkusen's other goal while Roque Santa Cruz and Ballack also found the net for Bayern. "We have to be happy with the point, but we could have had more," said Leverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler. In Italy, veteran striker Enrico Chiesa scored a hat-trick and newly signed Tore Andre Flo added another goal on Saturday as Serie A newcomer Siena thrashed Empoli 4-0 in an early match of Round 3. In a late match between two more new-comers, Ancona drew with Modena 1-1. Chiesa, a former Lazio star, converted two first-half penalty kicks and scored a spectacular left-footed goal. Flo, the Norwegian forward who joined Siena in the offseason, scored the fourth goal for the hosts in the 68th. Siena vaulted to four points in the Serie A table, two behind top contenders Juventus, AS Roma, Lazio, AC Milan and Inter Milan. |
