合理分析北京市地铁的优点与缺点

  Beijing's east-west metro line used to terminate at Xidan. Its long-awaited eastward extension in the summer of 2002 was accompanied by numerous changes in the Beijing underground system. It was about this time that public toilets became free of charge throughout the city, including those in the metro stations. Shortly after, information and directions for metro users not only increased but many signs started to appear in both Chinese and English. Now at each station a notice tells you /where/ you are and gives the number of minutes to stations up the track. When you board the train you can phone the person coming to pick you up and tell him or her exactly when you'll arrive.

  You probably tell him something like "Wait for me at the northeast exit." The majority of the metro stations have four exits ,which logically enough were formerly specified by the points of the compass. Maybe you understand why the authorities have taken it /into/ their heads to identify the exits as A, B, C or D, but I don't. At least the old naming system was the same for each station, made sense and was easy to get used to. Now a passenger getting off the train often becomes disoriented. Big signs say that at exit A you will find this or that shopping centre, bank or company. But not everybody recognizes these places or wants to go to them. Moreover, not everybody can read Chinese -- and these names, when translated, can be even more confusing.

  If, for example, I simply want to get out at the northwest exit and walk along Wangfujing without any particular destination in mind, I have to ask the station employees for the right exit. From the way they answer, it's clear I am not the only one to ask... Of course, these attendants have other things to do than give out information relating to a system no longer in existence. Nevertheless, before asking the question, I always try to sort it out by myself: I make my way through the mass of travellers moving in all directions, I take my spectacles out of my bag, and when I eventually succeed in reaching the notice showing (in small print) the names of the places nearby, I realize that I've got the wrong exit. I must then consult another notice at the other end of the platform!

  And this silliness is not just something that concerns a few foreigners who don't understand Chinese. What about the vastly greater number of people from the provinces now working in the city? What about the business people or occasional visitors coming from many other parts of the country?

  Thus, while there have been improvements in the subway system, certain changes have been for the worse. I long for a return to the simplicity of designating metro exits by the points of the compass.

  Also, I would like to see above the metro station entrances not just a notice saying "Beijing Subway" but the actual name of the station, as is done in Paris, Montreal, New York and many other cities. That would be so helpful in providing points of reference in this vast city. There is no lack of space for such signs, and we do need the extra information. The features of Beijing are in such constant flux that even a long-term resident sometimes gets the impression of being in an unknown city when he or she has not been to a given neighbourhood for a few months. Displaying the names of the metro stations would reassure pedestrians -- it would remind them /where/ they are in this phantasmagoric city. And all at no extra cost!

  北京东西线地铁以前的终点站是西单,2002年夏季期待已久的向东延伸带来了地铁系统的很多变化。就在那个时候,全市的公厕变成免费的了,其中也包括地铁里的公厕。此后不久,为地铁乘客提供的信息与方向指示不仅增加了,很多标志还开始以中英两种文字的面貌出现。如今,在每个地铁站都有标志告诉你身处何地,还告诉你到沿线各站需要几分钟。当你坐上地铁,你可以给接你的朋友打个电话,告诉他(她)你到达的准确时间。

  电话中你大概会告诉他说:“在东北出口等我。”多数地铁站都有四个出口,以前是极合理地以方位标出。也许读者你理解有关部门为什么决定用A、B、C、D来标出口,可是我不理解。至少,以前的命名方法在每个站都是一样的,而且一目了然并且很容易习惯。如今,下了车的乘客常常是不知东南西北,新的大标识上写着诸如从出口A出去你可以去这个或那个购物中心、银行、公司,但是,并非每个人都知道这些地方或者想去这些地方。此外,也不是每个乘客都认得汉字———当把这些地名翻译成英文时,就更让人糊涂了。

  举例来说吧,如果我就是想从西北口出来沿着王府井大街步行而没有任何特别的目的,就不得不向地铁工作人员询问该从哪个出口出去。从他们答话的不耐烦的口气看,我显然不是唯一问路的人。当然,这些工作人员除了告诉乘客那些不复存在的方位信息之外还有其他工作要做。可我在向他们询问之前,总是尽力先靠自己解决问题,我从向着各个出口走去的人流中挤过,从包里拿出眼镜,好不容易胜利到达一个写着附近地名(字很小)的出口标识下,我才知道走错了。我必须再去看站台另一边的标识。

  这一不明智之举,并不仅仅是关系到不懂中文的一些外国人,大量来自外埠在北京打工的人如何感觉?从全国各地来京出差或是偶尔来京的旅游者会怎样感觉?

  由此看来,当地铁加以改进的同时,某些变化变得更加不方便了。我盼望着能恢复用方位标地铁出口的简明方式。

  此外,我还希望看到在地铁站入口上方不要只写“北京地铁”,还要写上该站的站名,就像巴黎、蒙特利尔、纽约以及很多其他城市那样,这样做有助于向行人提供北京这个大城市的方位参照点。加上这样的标志并非没有空间,而人们又的确需要这一信息。北京的面貌在不断地变化,即便是长住北京的人若是几个月没有去过某地,也会有到了陌生地方的感觉。展示地铁站的名称会让行人感到心安———能让他们知道自己在这个魔幻般巨变的城市中所处何地,而做到这些有关部门并不需额外的支出。
