Learning to Play Violin by Heart

"If I had not been abroad for further study, I would have never imagined that there would be such different ways of playing violin around the world. Maybe we put too much pressure on the children in handling playing skills." Qian Zhou said at her lecture in Xiamen on September 27.

Qian Zhou, headlined a concert at Gulang Island on September 28, 2003. As a world-famous violinist, she came to Xiamen not only to perform, but also to share her experience of teaching. A lecture about teaching violin and piano was held on the day before the concert at the Holiday Shopping Mall. Together with Qian, came another world renowned pianist, Mr. Enrico Elisi, from Italy, who also performed in the next day's concert.

The lecture drew the attention of many local violin and piano learners and fans of classical music. There were also some graduate students majoring in this field and some musical instrument teachers attending the lecture. It was a relaxing and active lecture. The musicians did not want to talk too much about something theoretical. They'd rather communicate with the audience using music.

It is said that if you practice more than 10 hours a day, you will never make mistakes when playing even in your sleep. In fact, most children would be afraid of playing "boring" music all day long in this way. They are trained to be skillful but it is too hard for them to go further in music.

Qian Zhou emphasized that the young musicians should put more emotion and interest into their playing. She suggested that a child should just practice half an hour a day and that would be enough. What is more important is to make children more interested in music. We should introduce them to some operas or music pieces. By doing this, they would be fond of music and play musical instruments by heart. As children grow up, they will be able to put their own feelings into the pieces when playing.

Qian and Alisi played some pieces of music to set an example for the learners. Some children volunteered to step onto the stage and play. The two professional musicians listened and showed the audience how to improve. A boy played a piece of music by Chopin(肖邦). He mastered a very complex rhythm and was praised to be skillful, but his performance seemed to be impassive as it went too far from the original composition. Lecturers led him to imagine a scene of deep autumn; some delicate feelings were floating in the air. He might perform the music in a sad and blue mood. Although maybe it was a little difficult for a 10-year-old boy to understand the composer's intention. The audience could still understand the brand new way of how to teach learners to play music.

Violinist and recording artist Qian Zhou joins the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music faculty as Assistant Professor of Violin, beginning with the 2003-2004 academic year.

In 1987,eighteen-year-old violinist Qian Zhou introduced herself to the world of music with a brilliant triumph at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris, one of the top four major international competitions in the world. She broke all precedent in the competition's 50-year history by winning not only the First Grand Prize, but also the Best Mozart, the Recital, and the Virtuoso Prizes,as well as the International Artist and Audience Prizes. Since then,Ms Qian has been heralded as one of the finest violinists of her generation. She is a frequent recitalist and soloist with orchestras around the world.
