SHEN Yao is Shanghai's first art porcelain kiln. Four renowned painters from the city, Yu Xiaofu, Huang Azhong, Ma Xiaojuan and Shi Chan are four artists contracted to work with the kiln. Shen Yao's art porcelain combines ancient techniques of porcelain painting from Jingdezhen. The personal visual languages of the artists pushes the 1,000-year-old porcelain art techniquessintosa new phase of development. Yu Xiaofu is a painter in oils. He likes to reveal various colours under dark fractured surfaces. Bright colours are set off by the dark tones like precious stones. "I took up porcelain art as a way of relaxing," Yu Xiaofu said. "I was trying to play with fresh feelings in a new media." He went to Jingdezhen to paint on porcelain together with several other artists a few years ago, staying in the home of Lu Jun, a pottery artist, whose father is an experienced kiln worker. By and by, Yu discovered the rich content of pottery art. Yu admitted that he and the others were still limited to the "painting" stage of porcelain art. Their contribution to the art is that they automatically bring their methods of colour usage, sculpture and space arrangement, as well as their knowledge of modern art, to the ancient medium of porcelain. Their creations exhibit some fundamental differences from traditional pottery craft work. Senior professors and pottery artists from the Jingdezhen Pottery Institute have been greatly surprised by them. Shen Yao occupies a space of 1,000 square metres in the Jiading District. Each artist has his separate workshop. All the craftsmen working together with the artists are from Jingdezhen. To ensure the quality of the products, Shen Yao uses mud and water from Jingdezhen. "Porcelain made from Huangpu River water and mud look gray, even purified water doesn't work," Yu said. The artists will present their productions of the past year at the upcoming Shanghai Art Fair.
