Missing daughter a mystery
http://www.sina.com.cn 2003/10/23 13:09  Shanghai Daily

The parents of a 5-year-old girl who reportedly went missing in February have filed a lawsuit against the president of her primary school.

They are asking for 100,000 yuan (US,048) in compensation for mental anguish, although they say they still haven't given up on finding their daughter alive.

The Xuhui District People's Court has accepted the case and will hold the first hearing tomorrow.

While there has been no sign of Deng Yuting since she disappeared on February 17, her parents said they didn't file the lawsuit for money.

"In fact, we still hope to find our daughter," said Deng Jun, the girl's father. "We want to arouse the awareness of local government to regulate such schools. According to our investigation, the school is illegal since it never registered with the local education authority."

The school is one of many around the city set up by migrant workers for their children, since many migrant families can't afford the tuition charged at most local schools.

Since the school isn't legal, the family had to sue its president, Tan Zhenghua, instead of the Yuyuan Primary School itself.

Deng arrived in the city in February from Sichuan Province to reunite with her parents who are working in Shanghai. The family took her to the Yuyuan school in their Hongmei-area neighborhood, which was set up by Tan, a Henan Province native. After paying 400 yuan for tuition, they registered Deng on February 7, according to the lawsuit.

"Since both my wife and I must go to work in the daytime, we made it clear on the registration form that my daughter should take the school bus to and from school and have lunch at the school's canteen," said the girl's father.

On February 17, Deng left for the first day of classes, but never returned home.

Since then, the family has posted hundreds of notices about the girl along local streets, promising a reward of 5,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan for information. However, there has been no response.Surprisingly, the story hasn't been reported in a single local newspaper. The family also didn't bother to report the girl's disapearance to the police.

Tan hints that the family may have hidden the girl insgroupsto profit from the lawsuit.

He said the girl was seen just a few steps away from her home on the day she supposedly went missing.

The family said that as migrants they didn't know how to get the girl's picture and storysintoslocal papers.
