Taiwan police recover ransom

  Police in the island province of Taiwan have recovered US.61 million in ransom money paid to a kidnapping gang that briefly held a Taiwanese business-man on China's mainland, officials said yesterday.

  The wife of a suspect in the case turned in the money on Monday after finding the box of US currency in her home in the central Taiwanese city of Changhua, police officer Chang Ching-yu told reporters. Police were searching for the woman's husband, Pan Tuei, Chang said.

  About US,000 of the ransom money was missing, police said.The businessman, identified only by his surname, Kuo, was kidnapped last Wednesday in Dongguan in the southern province of Guangdongswheresmany Taiwanese companies have businesses.

  He was released on Sunday after his family in Taiwan followed the kidnappers' instruction and tossed a bag containing US.68 million on a highway in central Taiwan.
